　米Twitterは26日、特定の国の状況によっては、検閲を行う意向であることを公式ブログで発表した。

　「現時点で検閲を行なったことはない」としているが、今後しかるべき国の当局から要求された場合、ユーザーに明示したうえで検閲が行われることになる。Twitterでは、検閲の透明性を高めたいと考えており、どのような要求が当局から行われているかを、Chilling Effectsと提携することによって公開するとしている。

　検閲を行うためにTwitterはシステムを改良。これまでは国から検閲要求があった場合、該当アカウントを削除する以外に方法がなかった。改良によって、該当するツイートのみをその国で見られないようにする一方で、それ以外の国々では通常通り閲覧できるようにする。国を特定する方法としては、閲覧者のIPアドレスを利用する
